YOU GIVE BUT LITTLE WHEN YOU GIVE OF YOUR POSSESSIONS. IT IS WHEN YOU GIVE OF YOURSELF THAT YOU TRULY GIVE.
~KAHLIL GIBRAN FROM THE PROPHET
The story of extra-ordinary sacrifice of Subaida, a 60 year old woman from Kollam, Kerala, has largely gone unheard and has remained confined to the physical borders of the God’s own country. Driven by her intense desire to do something for the Covid affected, she resorted to selling the only possessions those she had- two goats. She donated the proceeds of her sale to the Chief Ministers’ Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). Husband-wife combine run a small tea stall near the port, at Kollam. Since the shop was shut due to lock-down, the only way she could raise the money was by selling her precious livestock. She said, she was moved by the plight of the effected and the suffering, was dead-set on making a difference. Once the sale was completed she proceeded to handover the sum to the appropriate authorities. She did not worry much about her losses in business, her ailing husband and the dependent brother. Although she was in the dark herself, she decided to light a candle for others. She is the real index of human refinement, in that, she was kinder than she was needed to be.
Interestingly, when this story made headlines in the vernacular press, a Malabar-based restaurateur and his partner, enthused by the self-less service of Subaida, decided to compliment her with compensation. The entrepreneur gifted her five goats in lieu of the two that she had sold earlier.
That is why it is said: The hand that gives, gathers. There are the universal laws of God and man: “Givers gain and Takers Lose”, is the most important of all.
